Taxidermy Elephant Trunk by Ward & Co

SOLD

Exceedingly rare and unique Victorian era hunting trophy of an Elephant trunk (snout) mounted upon its original shield by Ward & Co of London. A rare example of early Rowland Ward taxidermy and remaining in wonderful original condition. Modelled in an open-tip stance with all of the fine hairs and thick skin intact. The trunk is mounted to a shaped and polished wooden shield, showing aged patina with a metal plaque carrying the legend “ABYSSINIA 1878”. The reverse has a slot for wall hanging and small green-coloured paper trade label “Ward & Co, Naturalists, Zoological Studios, 158 Piccadilly, 4 Doors West of St. James’ Street”. A rather more significant piece being from the same year of Henry Wards death, Rowland’s much admired father who himself was considered one of the most prominent London taxidermists. This intriguing antiquity gives an insight to an era long gone, a fine relic from the heady days of the British Empire.
