Taxidermy Leopard Head

SOLD

Impressive colonial-era hunting trophy of a mounted Leopard head, superbly presented and of the finest original quality. Posed in a forward stare with snarling expression and opened jaw. The facial modelling has been skillfully rendered with realistic contours to the skin across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. An excellent coverage of fur remains along with good natural colour and markings, both ears are attached although with losses of hair. The full set of whiskers stand in place along with in-set glass eyes which have partial internal cracking. The mouth is in faultless condition, showing a detailed plaster construction with naturalistic painted finish. The teeth remain intact and solid to the gums. The head is set upon its original wooden shield, uniquely shaped and with additional trim surrounding the neck. The shield reverse carries a slot for wall mounting and faint inscription. The absence of a taxidermists label is surprising given the quality and style of the piece. Only a highly skilled and eminent firm of the period would have been capable of this output.
