Travel Case by Rowland Ward

SOLD

Antique travel case by Rowland Ward of London. The world-famous storefront in Piccadilly was a mecca for touring big game hunters and naturalists alike, where all manner of expeditionary equipment was supplied during the early 20th century. This is an unusual relic of that period, likely used for field or dressing tools, useful travel necessities or the storage of specimens. The case is bound in a robust light-green canvas and edged in leather. A strap fastens the lid closed. The top bears printed owners initials H.M. Perhaps suggesting one of Rowland Ward’s more discerning or noble customers. The exterior canvas and leather have aged appropriately for an item which has seen use and travelled well. The interior has a period maroon coloured lining, the two upper sections being removable to reveal further compartments beneath. An early-style trade label is applied to the underside of the lid ‘The Gallery of Natural History and Artistic Treatment of Trophies and Products, Rowland Ward Ltd, The Jungle, 167 Piccadilly W’. This label was most commonly used between 1907 and the outbreak of war in 1914.
